My Students

Have you ever listened to a beginning reader struggle to sound out sight words? If you have you understand my desire to help them learn those tricky words.

We have 21 students in our first grade room.

There are 13 girls and 8 boys. We are a high poverty, rural area school. We follow the "Reading First" literacy block. We are a "Leader in Me" school. Our benchmark goal for knowing sight words at the end of the year is at least the first 150 Frye sight words.

My Project

Having a rich variety of resources in both fiction and nonfiction will meet the demands and desires of all my readers to help them learn to become fluent accurate readers. Calling out words one by one as you decode them does not allow you to focus on understanding and remembering what you have read. In 1996, Dr. Fry expanded on Dolch's sight word lists and research and published a book titled "Fry 1000 Instant Words." In his research, Dr. Fry found the following results: * 25 words make up approximately 1/3 of all items published. * 100 words comprise approximately 1/2 of all of the words found in publications. * 300 words make up approximately 65% of all written material. So you can see the advantage of not having to decode these words. It allows you to read and comprehend what you are reading.

We want to become the best readers, writers, and mathematicians so we can get any job we want. If we reach our sight word benchmark goal that will help us reach our goal of becoming great readers. Thank you for your help in making reaching our goal more enjoyable.
