This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you recall the first time you read or experienced first-hand how vast this Earth was? Do you remember the sense of wonderment and excitement you felt when you realized the borders of your world stretched further than you could ever imagine? Further than your neighborhood, city, or even country?

My students are 5th graders who attend a diverse California public school.

The majority of our students come from low-income families, yet our students are amongst the highest achieving in CA! They come from working class families, many whom are first generation immigrants. They are hard workers with big personalities and big dreams. They are simply WONDERFUL!

My Project

A class set of "The Travels of Marco Polo" will open my students' eyes to the world outside of their neighborhood. They will learn and experience the same excitement and wonderment readers of Marco Polo's book felt hundreds of years ago. Students will understand how one man's account of his travels spurred the curiosity of so many and their eventual travels around the world, thus furthering the meetings and interactions between people from different corners of the world.

These Marco Polo books for many of my students, who come from lower socio-economic families, will be amongst their first introductions to the landscapes and peoples across the globe and their first opportunity to "travel" and see the world.

As the famous Mark Twain stated, "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness."
