Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach students in the inner city of Chicago. Half of my students are Latino, and half of my students are African-American. During the first semester of school, I teach a strict curriculum designed to improve reading comprehension among struggling readers. Every one of the books we read has a Latino main character. The books were great, but my African-American students continuously ask "Can't we read a story about black people?" For the second semester, another teacher and I created our own curriculum, trying to include some books that have strong African-American characters. Unfortunately, we had to use the books the school already owned, which made this difficult.
This year, we would like to teach "The Bluest Eye" by Toni Morrison. This is a story about a young African-American girl who wishes for blue eyes because she does not consider herself beautiful. One thing that I try to teach my students every year is to appreciate their own beauty. Unfortunately, this can be difficult in a society filled with super-skinny models and airbrushed magazine pictures. I truly believe the themes in "The Bluest Eye" would help our students make realizations about their own lives. Unfortunately, our school is unable to purchase copies of the books for us due to funding restraints.
Also, my students are always looking for stories about "real life." Toni Morrison writes beautifully about difficult issues. I think my students would truly benefit from reading this story. Your donation would purchase two class sets of "The Bluest Eye" while giving our students the chance to read a beautiful story that teaches them to search for true beauty in themselves.
