This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We got a grant 2 years ago for 15 band instruments but we cannot have a band unless I have enough for a full class of students. My students want to play band instruments but there is anywhere from 20-33 students in any class.

I teach in NY and my students are almost all English Language Learners from the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and other Latin American countries.

They are extremely creative but the state tests in ELA and Math do not reflect their creative ability in the arts, so our school has been rated poorly based on those exams. The school has a very caring staff and supportive administration that strongly advocates arts education, but we lack the resources to make the band class program a reality.

My Project

This is my 5th year at my school. When I came to the school I was shown a variety of band instruments in various stages of usability. In my 3rd year I started a band club based upon the 15 instruments I received in a previous Donors Choose grant. This project will ensure that an ENTIRE class of students can have the resources (trumpet, trombone, saxophone, reeds) needed to make a school band that will be a source of pride for the school and the community. I want my school to be known as the school that creates band students.

I cannot do this alone.

I need your help to provide 15 new band instruments for my students. When the grant is filled 1 class of 3rd grade students will be able to start band instruments which they will study til they leave the school in 5th grade. Their experience in band class will give them a sense of pride and accomplishment through school performances, increase their math and literacy skills outside the music classroom, help them to learn the importance of discipline techniques when practicing, and test their ability to properly care for a band instrument.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
