Comfy Corner for Kids with Autism

My students need a rug and bean bag chairs so they will have a comfy corner to sit and read. My students with Autism will especially enjoy the calming Pea Pod chair.

My Students

Many students with Autism have sensory issues that make it difficult to enjoy even the simplest activity. Our comfy corner can help our students enjoy quiet reading by providing the sensory input they need to remain calm and quiet while enjoying a good book!

My students are in kindergarten and they are full of energy.

They attend school in a rurally located public elementary school where our population of students with special needs and those requiring free and reduced lunch is growing. Six of the 42 students in our special education department are diagnosed with Autism. With the impending budget cuts our state is foreshadowing coupled with financial struggles felt by families in our area, my students may not experience the joy of cozying up in a quiet spot to read a good book. They must have these opportunities in order to ensure that they love reading and also to help them grow in their ability to maintain positive behaviors in school. My students will be excited to sit on their reading rug or cozy up in the Pea Pod chair and relax while the teacher reads aloud or they explore books on their own.

My Project

Our special education resource room currently has a great reading selection for students to choose from. What we lack is a reading nook, or cozy corner, for our students to really enjoy reading as we do in "real life". My students with Autism often have trouble sitting still and quiet in order to enjoy literature that either they read independently or that which is read aloud to them. These items will help make our reading corner the cozy, comfy, calm environment that my students need to really develop a love for reading! Support for this project will help my students to enjoy reading daily and encourage them to be life long readers!!

This project is important because it will allow my students to experience the joy of reading that we, as adults, sometimes take for granted.

Sitting in my hammock on the weekends, taking in a good book I often wonder if my students will ever really know the joy and adventure that can be found in literature. One of my most difficult challenges as a teacher is ensuring that my students are literate. This project will take that challenge one step further by making sure that they enjoy the process!
