My students need to work on their core strength and balancing skills. To do this, they need 6 exercise balls and a video that we can do as a class daily.

My Students

Remember when PE was fun? Physical activity can be instrumental for a person with autism to assist with his or her sensory integration, coordination, muscle tone, and social skills development. My class needs to work on building these skills in a small setting with one-on-one support.

I have a class of 5 boys on the Autism Spectrum.

The boys are in 3rd through 5th grade and all are more than 2 grade levels below their current grade. I have 2 verbal and 3 non-verbal students and most of them use an augmentative device to communicate. They LOVE physical activity and we find that they communicate even more when engaged in physical activity. They attend a public school and spend most of their day in a self-contained Autism classroom.

My Project

By providing my students with exercise balls and an exercise video, we will be able to work on balancing, team work, and core strength each and every day. The students will become more confident, their balance will increase, and they will be working on following directions as well as imitating.

This project is very special to me because it is a physical and engaging way to work on critical skills with my class.

I feel it will keep them better focused, help with their gross motor skills, and build core strength in a fun and expressive way. The skills they learn will follow them throughout their educational career and into their adult lives.
