Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
There is an entire world of opportunities available to anyone who has access to a computer and the Internet - and this world is currently just out of reach for many of my students. Having regular access to technology has become so commonplace that it's easy to take for granted!
My educational philosophy is that every child deserves a quality education, regardless of where he or she grows up.
I work in a school in the poorest Congressional district in the country. I teach 8th grade English-Language Arts to students from a broad range of academic backgrounds in a small middle school. Many of my students are English language learners, special education students or upwards of two-three years behind in reading and writing skills.
All of my kids come from low-income families, and many do not have access to computers at home. In today's world, most people in this country take it for granted that they have a computer in every room of their house or an arm's reach away. However, for my students, the reality is that the achievement gap is growing - and many experts say that technological lags in impoverished neighborhoods are partly to blame. If my kids are going to be both academically and professionally competitive, they must have consistent access to technology.
My Project
We don't need a behemoth, expensive desktop computer. A perfect solution for us would be a netbook computer. This small yet powerful computer would open up a world of technology for my classroom. With this tool, I can have students work in groups to research on the Internet, participate in interactive games, blog with their peers, communicate with schools in other countries, as well as publish their writing pieces. I would also be able to project lessons, activities, videos, and websites for the whole class to experience. A netbook would be a world-changing experience for all of my students, finally enabling them to experience some of the technology available to many of their middle-class peers.
With your help, my students will be prepared in all 21st century literacies. Too often, children in impoverished neighborhoods are left behind, and with the technology boom, that trend has accelerated. You will give my students a chance to continue to flourish even amid difficult circumstance
To some, having technology in the classroom may not seem like an essential need.
I could not disagree more with this sentiment, being able to use technology in the classroom, especially net books, means being able to more fluidly differentiate instruction and task for my kids - and this is certainly an essential and fundamental need. A net book would allow the kids who are academically behind to focus on remediation, while at the same time allowing kids who are gifted to work at a quicker pace.
