My Students
Do you remember sitting in class getting in trouble for fidgeting? What if your teacher had provided something for your fingers and hands to do while your mind was being engaged? We are learning to knit and crochet to keep our hands busy while the teacher is talking or reading?
Our classroom is quite lucky to be very diverse.
We have Alaska Native, Samoans, Tongan, African American, Hispanic, and almost a little bit of everything. The students are great at teaching one another and can be quite helpful. This year we have had two students who have experienced house fires. Our class is very excited to make scarves for those in need. They are learning that even though they are only 10 they have the ability to change and affect the world around them. This is one small way they can give back to the community that supports them.
My Project
My supply list is very simple. We need more crochet hooks and yarn. I have some of my grandmother's old knitting needles but they are starting to break. Some are quite ancient. My students are very excited to knit and crochet. In fact, I could have them in my room every day at lunch and they would be knitting and crocheting scarves (and maybe hats) for the homeless children of Anchorage. The average age of a homeless person in Alaska is 9. Help us give back and realize how lucky we are
Students today are very privileged.
Learning to give to someone you will never see or hear a thank you from is an amazing gift and opportunity for my students. They are already bringing in yarn from home but not much. They really want to do this project. However, neither my students or I can afford to buy all the supplies we will be needing for this project. We look forward to learning a fantastic life skill that will benefit other people in our community.
