In a center all by ourselves, our students rarely get to hear another person read to them. Since fluency is a vital part of learning to read, we are expanding our abilities by utilizing a listening center. As our site undergoes significant budget cuts, it is up to us to procure materials.
Our students are the most curious, quick-paced students we've ever seen!
All too often, they are asking us to read to them, help them sound words out or helping each other gain new skills. We are the only classroom in a fitness center in North Tulsa, and our children have the odds stacked against them. Most of our students' parents did not attend college, and some did not graduate from high school. Being able to give our youngest students a great foundation of learning they can use in years to come, we are doing our part to see that these 20 kids will graduate from not only high school, but college as well.
My Project
In an effort to create fun and engaging centers in our classroom, we would like to create a listening center that will allow our students to read independently or with their peers. This center will allow children to follow along with the books they are reading, word by word, and help them learn how to read. We have selected several books on CD that we will place in the listening center. These book kits are useful because they include more than one copy of each book, allowing each student at the listening center to have his or her own book to read.
This project is crucial to our classroom.
All too often, enrichment materials are overlooked - and most of the time due to costs. In one center we are able to reach every academic level our students are on, in a way that is safe and non-threatening. This project will not only enrich literacy time for our students this year, but also students in years to come.
