My students need a digital camera, multifunction printer, a laptop, a camcorder, ink and 15 books to experience using technologies to conduct research and present information about people in history and how they contributed/are contributing to history.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Can you imagine growing up as an African American girl with very little role models other than your teacher? With all of the many adversities that my students face, I must teach and show them that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
I have a single-gender class of 18 African American, vibrant, hard-working, and self-motivated girls who thrive for excellence each and everyday.
Upon entering onto the school campus, which is located in the heart of the inner-city, they forget about all of their mishaps, unforeseen dreams, and transform into believers, scientists, artists, and authors. They are determined to rise above poverty and achieve goals that may seem far a beyond. They continue to dream BIG!
My Project
After presenting the theme "PEOPLE WHO MADE A DIFFERENCE:Past, Present, Future" to the girls, they decided to conduct a research project to help them learn about people who look just like them, who have struggled, and who have overcame their obstacles. The books and computer will serve as tools to help them gather information, navigate the web, and create typed biographies of people who have and are making a difference in "their" world. The camera and video recorder will help them to capture the individuals (family members, principal, community leaders, fellow students) in their lives who have made a difference, are making a difference, and who WILL make a difference in the future. I am enthused because not only will I be able to use the resources in my classroom during Black History Month, but also for other projects in my classroom throughout the years to come.
I pour out my heart to you to fulfill this diligent request.
I need your help in providing my girls, who are striving to become successful, with the best education. With some of them aspiring to become the next president of the USA, doctors, scientists, and even astronauts, I have to be the cheerleader in the forefront encouraging them to dream on. I ask that you help me- help them- realize that all of their goals are attainable and that barriers can be and WILL be broken. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE.
