My Students

In our globalized modern world, the ability to use a computer can help make or break a student's success. Currently, our computer lab consists of several laptops that are not in working condition and are even missing keys.

I believe my students are among the hardest working in Ohio.

My students rise to high expectations every single day, working at an incredibly rigorous college-prep school located in a severely impoverished area of Ohio. Students go to school from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm every single day and have 2 hours of homework every single night, including weekends and vacation. They are amazingly hard workers and strive to overcome challenges every day. They are climbing that mountain to college and introduce themselves by saying, "My name is _______ and I'm going to college in 2018."

My Project

I know that the ability to use technology and laptops on a semi-daily basis will change my students' lives for the better. Firstly, in a low-income area, not all of my students have computers at home. Having access to technology at school is so important for them so that they learn the life skills they need to succeed. Secondly, my students are hand-writing every single thing they publish. This creates negative sentiment towards writing: hand-writing that much hurts! Computers can lessen the effect of pencils and will inspire my students to write more. Thirdly, my students struggle with spelling. The ability to type their stories, poems, letters, and essays on a computer will vastly improve their spelling and build my students' confidence as writers. Finally, my students LOVE technology. They enjoy doing everything from math problems online to typing games to improve their words per minute. Bringing laptops into my classroom will help them love learning and writing.

One cannot succeed in this world without access to and knowledge of technology.

For so many of my students, they are unable to gain access to that knowledge at home. It is so important for them to have the ability to use and experiment with technology at school so that they can learn this absolutely necessary life skill. It is also just as important that they have access to laptops so that they can continue to love writing and explore different ways to publish and present their work.
