My Students

"He who has health has hope; he who has hope has everything" - Arabic Proverb. In our rural community, health and physical fitness are certainly not a top priority. Sadly, many of our female students lack the knowledge & confidence to affect changes in their lives when it comes to their own health.

Our school is small & rural.

There are approximately 430 students in grades Pre K-5, with approximately 70% receiving free or reduced lunch and riding buses to school. The local diet, due largely to reduced economic status, consists heavily of fried food, processed cheap snacks, sugary sodas and artificially flavored "juice" drinks. Not surprisingly, many of our students are overweight & unfit. I feel that we can "arm" our girls with the ammunition of knowing what healthy food choices to make & the affect that eating well has on our bodies, and most importantly the affect that physical fitness has on our bodies, minds and souls.

My Project

As I mentioned, we are a very rural community. There are no sidewalks, with the exception of an approximately 1/2 mile stretch in the middle of "town". Many of our parents don't have cars, so mapping out a route of a certain distance can be extremely difficult. Should we be awarded the GPS system requested, the coaches of our new girls' running program will be able to go to each girls' home & map out a safe, predictable distance for them to train. Also, by having her own journal, each girl can track her daily fitness activities, be encouraged to write down how she's feeling that day, and overall help keep her accountable.

In showing these girls that they CAN complete a 5K race, I know that we can raise their self esteem and tolerance, improve classroom performance, and empower them to make changes in our community, not just become another statistic.
