African American Literature Books (Full Class Set).

My students need a classroom set of books to read for their English II class. They are hungry for more than the excerpts of stories provided in their textbooks!

My Students

My students are victims of low expectations. They have been provided textbooks with excerpts of stories that do not relate to their lives in a meaningful way. I have been running off copies of the story The Things They Carried and am pleased to say they are hungry for compelling stories.

I teach at a financially impaired high school in the city of Philadelphia.

My students are intelligent, insightful, and hungry to learn. They have been misjudged due to their poor test scores and have been provided with textbooks, which only have excerpts of stories, and a scripted program that has literature that does not connect to their experience and is not challenging enough. In order to cultivate a love of literature, I am asking for donations to create a classroom set of textbooks.

My Project

I have asked for Native Son as a lens to look at discrimination towards African Americans and women, the effect that the media has on society, and as a means to reflect on the amount of agency we have in our lives. I have asked for Caucasia in an effort to cultivate a love for storytelling and to talk about the way we as people are always finding ways to divide ourselves. I will use these stories to challenge my students to make real world connections, deepen their analytical skills, and to show students the importance of sharing stories.

My project is important, because we are moving into an age of digital literacy in which novels and stories are slowly being replaced.

I want my students to see the value that stories have to change lives, the reason why writers write and must write, the significance of giving voice to the voiceless, and the importance of telling their stories.
