My students are amazing. They're creative, caring, and full of fire. They attend a financially impaired high school that has recently come off of the persistently dangerous list. Due to past conflicts in the school, our students often have a stigma attached to them. Many of them have had to deal with issues outside of school that I could not fathom having to deal with. As a result, it takes a lot of energy and compassion to keep them engaged. Often, they do not have resources for school supplies, so each day begins with scrounging up materials for them (pencils, markers, pens, paper, etc.). This year, I am hoping to optimize learning time and student engagement by always having resources for my students in the classroom. This involves tapping into their interests with the literature I select and making sure they have the supplies they need. Many students have gone through our school without ever having a non-textbook in their hands; I refuse to let this happen to my students.
