Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
During our Human Rights Expedition, our middle school students have been challenged to expand their world view. Reading novels about compelling characters and the struggles endured will open the students mind to what others have gone through . . . and are going through today.
Our students are middle schoolers (7th and 8th grade) from the Midwest and are attending an Expeditionary Learning school.
They come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. They choose to come to our school for a more project/problem based learning experience.
My Project
With the books, students will be able to experience being involved in the lives and circumstances of young people who have lived through very difficult times. Not only will they gain insight to issues that have in the 20th century and are still happening today.
Reading is a challenge to students today.
We have been reading news articles about human rights violations and we have watched the students become personally invested in the lives of people around the world. We hope that reading these novels about a character's experiences will only further deepen their openness and caring toward others.
