My Students

Picture yourself in your middle school Language Arts class with the challenging books presented during those three years. Now try to image how hard it would have been to succeed if you were reading at a first or second grade level. This is the challenge my students face every day.

My students are special needs students that receive intense Language Arts instruction to try to improve reading and comprehension skills.

I have students that are mainly diagnosed with ED/OHI. These issues have greatly impacted the students' learning throughout their educational careers. These children have to have all test and reading materials read to them in class to help them comprehend the lesson being taught. During the school day in my classroom, students get frustrated during reading lessons and have meltdowns, which further delays the learning process. The school district they attend is a high risk urban district located in Illinois. Poverty has plagued the school district, and a vast major of the students that I teach come from generational poverty families.

My Project

With an iPod and docking station the students will be able to be more independent in the classroom. This independence will hopefully lead to fewer outbursts and lead to increased learning within the classroom. While a small group is listening to the story and following along in their books, I would be able to work one-on-one or with a small group to teach important reading strategies and help the students become stronger readers. This is very important to these students to enjoy being independent learners. With just this small success, the students will be able to see that they are able learners and can enjoy reading quality literature without the help of a teacher or classroom aid.

This project is very important to these students.

Even though they struggle with the reading process, the students will be able to listen to and read quality literature. This new independence will allow the students to enjoy reading without become frustrated and having meltdowns.
