My Students

My personal goal is to crush the elementary science achievement gap into the ceiling, and I need your help to do it. My three Title 1 schools need new LCD overhead projectors. Your investment in our science program will help make closing the achievement gap in elementary science a reality.

This proposal does not make sense unless you understand that I teach science at six elementary schools, serving more than 800 forth and fifth grade students each week.

When I first began teaching elementary science, many of the teachers I worked with assumed that the state science test was more of a reading test than a science test. I even heard a speaker at a Title 1 conference assert that students would do better on the science test if science instruction were eliminated in favor of more reading instruction. Nothing could be farther from the truth. When science is taught, reading and math are also taught. By creating a balanced, activity based program, district wide proficiency in science has risen from 51% in 2004 to 82% in 2010. Science proficiency in our district has exceeded proficiency in language arts for three years. In 2010, every Title 1 school had at least 40% or more students scoring advanced on the STAR science test. My students are bright, and so is their future.

My Project

I am requesting three overhead projectors, one for each of the Title 1 schools in our district. As a science specialist, 2007 California Teacher of the Year, and recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching, I believe in giving my students my best. I arrive each day with crates of activities that I have built to teach the standards. But doing science is not enough. Children need to take notes, draw diagrams, and see vivid images. The old projectors in the lab are prone to cycling off and their images are too dim. Imagine being a fifth grader. The teacher has just put some shaving cream in an empty soda can. The can is placed in a vacuum chamber. The pump is turned on. Shaving cream erupts, filling the chamber. The kids are hooked; they want to take notes and draw diagrams. They're ready to learn, but they can't. The projector has gone out, or it won't turn on, or the lights need to be turned off to see the image on the screen.

I have asked for three projectors, one for each Title 1 school.

Science scores have gone from worst to first. But, with your help, we can do more. I honor my students by making science accessible, touchable and fun. Being able to project notes and provide vivid images is a crucial aspect of our program. Help me in my quest to close the achievement gap. Your gift will enhance an already successful program, and make success a reality for even more students.
