Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"The worth of a book is to be measured by what you can carry away from it," said James Bryce. Our School Family Book Club, 4th-6th graders and their families read together and celebrate at school with teachers. We perform, discuss, do activities, and eat related foods.

Our fourth through sixth graders are absolutely amazing students!

Many students face challenges, such as being English language learners and a lower socioeconomic class, and yet their enthusiasm and passion for reading is absolutely inspiring. Our school has worked hard to create a strong culture of reading. We celebrate students' successes and charge through their challenges.

My Project

Imagine walking into a school gymnasium. Students are sitting with their families. Rumblings of excitement are evident. Then as the teacher approaches the microphone, the crowd quiets. This is the beginning of our School Family Book Club evening celebration, however the thrill begins five weeks ahead of time. Students sign up to be in the Family Book Club without knowing the book. A week later, each student will receive a copy of "Dodger and Me" to read at home with their family. Some students will get a CD to listen to the story depending on their reading level. This particular book is a great way to kick off the year. It is whimsical and accessible to all students while will still enrapture adults. It is also a Blue Stem award nominee.

This project in its entirety will foster a love of reading.

Students will be so excited to share the story with their parents and celebrate the book. At the celebration, students and teachers perform a skit, then students, parents, and teachers discuss the book in small groups, participate in an activity, eat food related to the book, and win prizes! This project fosters the relationship between home and school. It is a direct connection for the students to witness.
