My Students

Do your remember how it felt to own your first very own book? Please help us build the libraries of some very eager five year olds!

This is an after school Kindergarten book club in great need of books for the children to claim as their very own.

We live in a rural area in Southeast Missouri with a very high percentage of free and reduced lunch. We have no industry in our town. Most of our children are bused in. A large percent of our students are at risk. Most from blended families or single parent families.

My Project

Our after school book club has ignited a fire for reading in five years olds for the past two years. We have been able to introduce literacy in a fun and exciting way. Our first grade teachers tell us what a difference they see in those who attend Kindergarten book Club. We meet for a hour after school once a month. We have snacks, read a book, and create a craft pertaining to our book. The parents arrive in time to help with our craft. In January we introduce The Accelerated Reading Program to the parents and students. At that time the students take AR tests on the books we have read. What a boost this is for First grade! We have been able to hit some really good yard sales, but budget cuts have hit us hard. Please help us make a difference in the lives of our children by donating books to our program!

To see the joy on a child's face as he or she chooses a book for mom or dad to read at bedtime brings tears to this 31 year teaching veteran.

I believe this is the most worthy project I have ever been involved in. It is worth every minute I stay after school. We get to interact with students and parents. What a blessing! Please help us continue this project. It does have lasting benefits for our students and parents. We have had such positive feedback for the past two years.
