it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a first year teacher and needless to say I'm excited to begin my journey as a 6th grade teacher at a school in South Central Los Angeles. Starting in July, I will begin an exciting and challenging journey of becoming a social justice educator who actively challenges the educational inequalities in our society and who plans to provide the best possible education for my students.
Schools have the obligation to create equity and access for all students and families, but at times, the system adheres to the status quo. So as a teacher, it is MY job to create a just and equitable classroom while providing a rigorous academic curriculum. Although my heart is in it to change the serious realities that are going on in our educational system, sometimes we need a little help with resources and materials to reach our goals.
I will be teaching 6th graders about the fascinating history of ancient civilizations. It is my philosophy that in order for our students to be engaged, they need to be able to connect it with their own lives. Students need to be able to find the content relevant and meaningful. Also, about 76% of my students are English Language Learners and need extra auditory, visual, and kinisthetic tools to be able to get the maximum comprehension.
When I start in July, I will be given an outdated history textbook that I myself also used in the 6th grade. Since I am a first year teacher, I don't have any of my own materials that perhaps other teachers have collected in their past years. I have a fear that my eager sixth graders will walk into an empty classroom. I won't let that happen.
That is why I am asking for generous donors to help to purchase an amazing Ancient Civilizations Teacher's Set from National Geographic that includes several books for each civilaztion, vivid transperancies, audiolessons, teacher lessons, and and learning masters.
All these materials will help my students academic vocabulary, help with fluency, develop key concepts, and support comprehension. I know that with the help of private donors and commited people like myself, we can make a change. Thank you.
