My Students

"Be the change you want to see in the world," Mahatma Gandhi said, and a wonderful way to help students apply this to their own life and understanding is through S.E. Hinton's novel, "The Outsiders."

I have just joined the opening of a new school.

The school has a variety of students from all socioeconomic walks of life. While it is exciting to be in a brand new school, there are downsides: many of the supplies an older school has built up over time are not available to us. We desperately want to start the year with an inspiring novel to help kids learn to love reading and Language Arts, but have no way to reliably get materials for quite some time.

My Project

Anyone who has read "The Outsiders" has been touched by the fact that, as many of the characters say, "Things are rough all over." It's the choices that we as individuals make, that can break or make us, no matter where we are from. This novel allows kids to view things from others' perspectives, to see the world through different eyes, to become less self-involved, and to learn that one person can make a difference--through writing.

I have yet to have a student who has not been touched in some way by this novel.

Please allow my students the opportunity to have access to this wonderful novel to help set the tone for a fantastic year. Thank you!
