Hands Speak: Improving Literacy Through Sign Language

My students need the Signing Time Classroom Edition: instructional DVDs, music CDs, and lesson plans to provide sign language curriculum in the classroom.

My Students

"The more pathways created in the brain, the stronger the memory," (from the article, "Using Sign Language and Fingerspelling to Facilitate Early Literacy"). Using sign language in the classroom will allow my special needs students to turn from struggling readers to successful readers.

My students are students with special needs.

Our school is in an urban Illinois, high-need community. We lack many of the resources that are provided to other schools because of budget cuts. My students are always eager to learn and are resilient in the face of adversities.

My Project

Teaching sign language to struggling readers allows for the reaching of multiple intelligences. Words are represented through seeing, hearing, and movement, making new information easier to learn. Students will have fun and be engaged in these "hands on" lessons! Sign language also supports oral language development through repetitions of words or concepts using multiple modalities, which aids in reading comprehension. The Signing Time curriculum provides lesson plans, instructional DVDs, and music CDs to facilitate the learning of sign language in the classroom.

Donating to this project will provide a multi-sensory approach to help struggling readers.

Using sign language in the classroom provides motivation and excitement to learning new sight words and spelling words. It is my hope that my special needs students will gain a new confidence in themselves and their reading abilities through the use of this sign language curriculum.
