My Students

In first grade, the children are beginning the JOURNEY of learning to READ! At the beginning of this journey it is vital that the children not only learn to read but learn to listen to someone else read to them. By listening to someone else read, the child is grasping the reader's sense of fluency.

I have the pleasure of teaching twenty-two awesome first graders.

During our day, the students are given the opportunity to have "D.E.A.R. Time". D.E.A.R. stands for "Drop Everything And Read". My students are always eager to pick up a new a book and dive right in! By using this set, the students will be able to use their D.E.A.R. time to not only read but also listen to someone read to them which is so vital in the life of a blooming reader.

My Project

By allowing the children to read and listen to the books within the "Single Student Read Along Kit" using the portable cd player, the students will be able to build reading fluency, appropriate pacing, intonation, and expression. This will also give the students the opportunity to build their vocabulary and enhance their listening comprehension skills.

The various components of reading are essential in building young children's intrinsic motivation for reading.
