My Students

Imagine if you had never seen the Eiffel tower, Mount Rushmore, or the Great Wall of China! I want to show my students everything from the running of the bulls in Pamplona to the actual events of 9/11.

Our school is an all-male public charter school in the inner city, serving a high poverty urban population.

We have an extended day, week, and year to keep our scholars engaged in positive behaviors and increase learning time. Although we have made significant progress, we still have a long way to go!

My Project

I am requesting an LCD projector because of their amazing ability to engage students in the course content. Our course includes geography, culture, conflict, government, economics, and modern issues such as health, poverty, crime, and the environment. Imagine the power of showing clips on genocide and the life of a refugee- of showing the bright flamenco dances of Spain and the tribal music and dance of Africa! In class, my scholars constantly ask me “what does that look like?” or “Can we see it?" While I try to anticipate this and have printouts available, I can’t always predict their questions, and I hate not being able to satisfy their natural intellectual curiosity! Just look at my picture: see how involved they were when I borrowed a projector—now imagine if they were that interested each and every day?

I am requesting an LCD projector so my visual learners can see first-hand what exists outside of Baltimore.

An understanding of other cultures and issues will allow my scholars who rarely leave the city to understand: what IS the world like? What is MY role? Young people today are lost! Your help will bring energy and life to my content and my classroom.
