My Students

Remember as a child how a book could take you anywhere in the world? Well, I want to take my students to the Museum of Metropolitan Art in New York City. I want to capture their imagination with this Newbery Medal winning book!

Many of my students have not had opportunities to travel to many other states.

Their neighborhood is the only world they know. One way I can expose them to a new place and expand their horizons is through reading. 98% of the children at my school receive free and reduced lunch and are considered at risk. Oftentimes, "at risk" students have access to fewer stimulating, high-quality resources. Despite the challenges and obstacles that the students and teachers face, we have been rated Exemplary by the state of Texas. We just want our students to have the same opportunities as their higher income peers. Some students will get the chance to travel to New York City for the first time on a trip sponsored by the after school program. This book will provide a tiny glimpse into an exciting new city!

My Project

I am requesting a class set of "From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler" by E.L. Konisburg and an accompanying CD for my listening center. It is a wonderful children's classic. Reading from a textbook doesn't necessarily inspire a child to become a life-long reader. As adults, think about how you enjoy and interact with books. You read a book, share it with a friend, and discuss the major ideas and themes. I want to let the children lead discussions with each other in literature circles. Last year, I used "The Witches" by Roald Dahl, "The Tale of Despereaux" by Kate DiCamillo, and "Bridge to Terabithia" with small literature circles. It made a tremendous difference not only in their comprehension levels, but in their daily excitement for reading. It's a very motivating tool for reluctant readers to be able to share the reading process with their friends. I want them to develop leadership and self-sufficient readers.

It's unfortunate that in America, your socioeconomic status can determine your level of access to high quality resources.

At my campus, we are doing our best to ensure that our students have an equal opportunity for academic achievement. Please help open the door to life-long literacy for my fifth graders!
