Building traditions is an important part of classroom teaching. Last year, our 8th grade class culminated our year by doing an integrated project on rocketry and space history. We had an amazing time incorporating history, science, math, and reading, finishing with a class rocket launch.
I teach 8th grade science in a K-8 urban school.
Our school district has been in turmoil for the past few years as enrollment has been shrinking and schools closing. This has affected our school as well, as students from the closed schools are welcomed into our community. As we start blending students from many different schools, we are losing our own school pride and sense of tradition. That is why it is important to have annual projects that engage the students and show the younger kids what they have to look forward to.
With your help, we can create a new tradition: 8th Grade Spring Rocket Launch. This project is valuable to the students in many ways. It is incorporated into their U.S. History studies, as they learn about the 1950s and 60s and the Space Race. It is interwoven in our science unit on the planets and space exploration. It helps the students learn about controlling variables, as they build a prototype rocket out of paper and launch it with air, then apply their knowledge on the "real" rocket. It builds math skills as they practice some simple trigonometry when they try to figure out how high their rocket flew.
Donating to this project will help make this excellent learning opportunity possible.
Doing this project will help the students learn how to think, plan, design, and apply - all necessary skills for our future leaders. But it will also help give them a sense of pride - that they are being given the chance to participate in building a tradition.
