My students need a camcorder and basic accessories for creating historical documentaries for competition in the National History Day competition.

My Students

Have you ever participated in a competition at the national level? Last year several of my students did just that - at National History Day! This year it is our goal to increase our chances of success.

I teach social studies with heavy integration of language arts, especially reading, in the state of Mississippi.

I teach a total of 152 wonderful sixth grade students who are excited about embarking on the challenge of competing in the National History Day competition. Our school is a Title I school with approximately 77% of our students on free or reduced lunch. As many schools in MS, money for classroom needs is limited. This necessitates seeking outside assistance.

My Project

Last year students at my school began participating in the National History Day contest. There are several categories in which individuals or groups of students can choose to compete. The category that my students are most interested in undertaking is creating a historical documentary. Following extensive research about their chosen topic, the students will write and produce the documentary. Here's our dilemma ... creating a documentary requires readily available technology. I have none to offer. a I have requested a camcorder with case, tripod and memory cards. With this basic technology, my students will be able to produce historical documentaries for the competition.
