My Students

Students love to see themselves and their friends in videos and I want to take advantage of this in my science class. With 30 students in a class, one video camera is not enough. By adding two more Flip Video cameras, more students will be able to complete projects in a reasonable time frame.

I teach Biology and Earth and Space Science at a diverse, high-poverty and military serving high school.

We serve students of all needs and education levels. I will have approximately 90 freshmen Biology students and 90 senior ESS (Earth and Space Science) students benefiting from this project. The freshmen will be experiencing high school science for the first time and I want to make it exciting and accessible so they will be eager to continue on to higher levels of science in their high school career. The seniors will be experiencing their last year of high school and I want to make sure they enjoy their class, are excited about learning, are exposed to current trends and are further inspired to pursue a career in science. Overall they are a bunch of great kids that deserve to have the best experience in a science classroom (and out) as possible.

My Project

Students today get a large amount of information through video technology. I would like to bring that into my classroom by using flip video cameras. I want students to enjoy using their technology for learning and not just entertainment. Video technology is being used in colleges to better demonstrate concepts and review materials. The flip video cameras will allow students to record laboratories, demonstrations and field experiences. Students will be able to create videos and podcasts. There are a number of education and college courses that are now being offered through podcasts. One project will be the creation of PSA’s (public service announcements) to be broadcast during the school announcements. This requires research, planning, collaborating, story-boarding, teamwork, taping and editing. By using an alternate method of project submission and documentation I hope to engage more students and inspire them to pursue a scientific career.

With your help more students will be interested in science and technology.

We need more students pursuing science degrees and careers. By helping the students demonstrate their learning of science through video they will be more interested in taking the next step in pursuing a scientific career. Learning will be more accessible for ALL with all these video tools!
