Crash Course in Citizenship

My students need a camera for the classroom so that they may explore New York and its history to complete compelling, college level projects with photographs.

My Students

All the students in my class are English Language Learners - it is often difficult to express your full comprehension without the aid of a visual medium when you lack the vocabulary. My students are interested and excited, now they just need the tools to show what they learned and know.

My students are great!

I have already had the chance to meet them over the summer. About half of my class is from Asia (mostly China), the other half is from the Dominican Republic, the remaining few percent are as varied as NYC itself. We are a title 1 school, which means all of our students qualify for free lunch, and almost all of our families live below the poverty line. But that doesn't stop them from working very, very hard! Their behavior is exemplary, and often embodies what i feel is the American work ethic - they come in on time, they stay late, they help each other out, they know they must succeed. It is not in every classroom that a teacher is so luck to have students so dedicated to learning the language and culture of their adopted land.

My Project

I am requesting only one camera because I think it will be a good beginning for my class, and because I want to ensure the project gets funded quickly so that we may begin to work on our projects right as school starts. I built a unit that explores NY history and focuses on citizenship and learning useful words, phrases and concepts for living in the city. This unit also allows me to support the Social Studies teachers - so the students learning is carried over multiple content areas. Reading books, watching documentaries and going to sites are all great ways to learn, but my students are often limited by their vocabulary to show me just how much they understand. The camera will also allow for a certain interactive quality with the students environment which will enhance the amount of information obtained and retained.

In general the visual element is essential to student learning and differentiated instruction as per learning style and competency; this is particularly vital in a classroom with English Language Learners.

The level of their stress (acculturative) can be mitigated by providing avenues of expression which are varied and are highly expressive without being bogged down by vocabulary. I want to give my students every opportunity to be heard - as future citizens of the U.S and as people.
