WELDING CREATIVE MINDS- Metal Sculpture for Middle School

My students need a mig welder, helmets, coveralls, gloves and wire for our art class. Our art class specializes in sculpture and welding metal is a needed feature.

My Students

How do you weld creative minds without the proper tools? Imagine the possibilities when 7th and 8th graders learn welding and metal fabrication skills. We will be designing an art car that looks like a razorback - our mascot- and repurposing found materials to turn them into freestanding sculptures.

I think my school has the perfect mixture of students.

We have a well balanced group of students in every ethnic, socio-economic, and cultural background. The students get along very well and are eager to do all of the exciting things we provide. Students choose our school and apply in a lottery system regardless of grades, behavior, or anything. Most specialty schools have criteria that limit who can attend. Our school gives every child an equal chance to attend and in many cases the chance to change the path they are on. RMS is a math, science, and fine arts school in Texas with all of the issues a big city has. Through grants and hard work on the part of the staff we provide students the most unique experience I have seen in 25 years of teaching

My Project

With the tools we are requesting my students will learn how to weld metal for sculptures. The basic skills learned and developed through art are easily transferable to real world skills needed in many careers. We will use these tools to transform an old VW Beetle into a razorback hog which will become our mascot art car. In that project alone the welding supplies will be used to create features on the car that represent the hog like snout, ears, tail, legs, and razor barbs on the roof. Another planned project is the Junk-kritters where students will scavenge for unusual metal recyclable objects to weld into large sculptural animals for our outdoor art museum garden.

I am doing projects in this school with these kids that I never dreamed of with even high school children.

It's not that kids can't do these things, it's that they just don't get the opportunity. At my school, we are breaking ground, doing the unexpected, and our kids are voracious learners. This is something so real and tangible and they are willing to give it their best.
