My Students

Whether your face has been kissed by the sun several times (freckles), parentheses are forming on your face from smiling and laughing so much (wrinkles), or your hair is taking on the Kojak look (thinning/balding), each of us have the power to help others to “Put Your Smile On.”

As a 34-year veteran business teacher, I teach Multimedia/Desktop Publishing (grades 10-12), Keyboarding Applications (grades 9-12), and Entrepreneurship Education (grades 11-12).

Enrollment in these business courses for the 2010-2011 year is approximately 98 students of which 54% will receive free/reduced lunch and 35% have special educational needs. Our school and community is located in the mountains of Southwest Virginia with the primary employment being industry, farming, and service jobs.

My Project

For two years, business students have partnered with a local second grade class to write and illustrate storybooks for each student, and copies are donated to a local pediatric office. The two groups also join forces to host a celebration for local heroes who receive a Hometown Hero book and certificate designed by the two groups. We would like to expand our projects by: making copies of each book for every second grader in the class; distributing copies to a second local pediatric office, the county’s adult literacy program, and the children’s wing of a hospital; including an author’s page in each book; and presenting each Hero and second grader with a photograph of the presentation. Expanding these projects, in addition to other projects, i.e., printing school’s literary magazine and scrapbook for the local VFW, requires more ink. I have one printer which uses four cartridges which are empty, and there are not any replacements in storage.

Students will learn patience, perfection, and pride and become aware of others' needs and benefits offered.

Skills developed will help students as they continue their education and become members of our society. To continue and expand our projects, we need your assistance in helping students, medical facilities, adults learning to read, and heroes put their smile on. Whether they have kisses on their body, parentheses on their face, and/or hair or not, please help us "Put Your Smile On."
