My Students

Any science student will tell you that the most meaningful and interesting classes involve "doing science" through hands-on labs and activities. Unfortunately, during the past year there were many investigations we could not perform due to lack of resources.

Your donations are going to help inquisitive middle school scholars (yes, they work so hard we call them scholars, not students!) discover science.

Our school, located in the lowest income area of Washington, DC, serves children who have mostly been educationally neglected by their schools until this point in their lives. Despite the disadvantages and setbacks that our scholars enter our school with, our school (currently beginning its third year)is on track to become one of the highest performing public schools in the entire city of Washington, DC.

My Project

Being that we are a new school, operating out of a previously shut-down public school building and still working on building our base of essential supplies and staff, it is difficult to find money for in class science resources, such as balances and test tubes. My students need triple beam balances and test tube to complete science lab activities throughout the school year. After reflecting on last year, I have determined that this equipment will be the most beneficial additional to all science classes for the upcoming year. A class set of balances would allow each of 7 science classes to expand their scientific inquiry and exploration skills, especially as focus on measurement and tools of a scientist towards the start of the year. In addition to being used with all classes this year, triple beam balances are an essential addition to any science program and will continue to be used with all classes (especially as we more than double our student population) in the upcoming school years.

I have worked in a variety of low-income community schools prior to this experience, and I have never encountered students as inquisitive or excited about science as the scholars I teach now.

Throughout my first year at this school, the scholars' curiosity for definitely piqued by many of the scientific concepts they were exposed to. We look forward to your donation helping us to continue our exploration of science this year!
