My students need blood typing kits and stains to visualize cells which will help them better understand genetics and cell biology.

My Students

Codominance. Rhesus factor. Endoplasmic Reticulum. These terms sound foreign to my students. With no way to visualize these ideas and no way to conduct labs, my students have a difficult time comprehending these strange things.

My students are an eager bunch, who love to do labs in order to further their understanding of science.

From the first day, they told me the best part of science was doing labs. My students love to get their hands wet doing labs that deal with forensics or medicine. Our school unfortunately does not have many of these lab supplies readily available.

My Project

I am requesting four kits of blood typing refills for my classroom. Last year, I introduced my students to blood typing and they had a blast. They got to see how blood typing is used in the real world and as a bonus mastered the complicated genetics of blood typing which is a high school concept. With these refills, my next set of students will also experience the thrill of discovering how blood type is related to genetics. The second item I am requesting is a kit that allows students to take cells and stain them, looking at organelles. They will be able to swab their own cheek cells and then stain the cells so they can see the parts of their cells under microscopes.

These labs will provide my class with the ability to do science instead of see science.

I have noticed that quiz and test scores tend to go up when a lab is involved. Having hands-on activities makes science both accessible and exciting to my students. These labs are things that not many students get to experience, so I would like to give my students that opportunity. These labs have already helped my previous students decide to pursue careers in science and medicine.
