We Won't be 'Sensored': Probing Math & Science

My students need Vernier sensors, light sensors, microphone, sound level meter, and temperature probe to collect real-time data in order to link conceptual math to real-world, hands-on scenarios that they can see and touch.

My Students

Mathematics and physics exist outside of the textbook ... and the classroom! My students want to explore that realm (not by watching DVDs, reading research articles, or plowing through the textbook). We're investigating light, sound, magnetic fields, and much more. To do so, we need to collect data!

Our school is located in rural Texas.

My students come from the middle to lower tiers of the socio-economic spectrum. My classes range from 8-20 students in grades 10-12. With classes this size, we are able to take advantage of collaborative group activities. While instilling in my students that success is a personal pursuit, I also teach them that cooperative exploration is essential to learning to contribute to society once they leave my classroom.

My Project

In order to participate in small-group, investigative projects, my students have received 3 Vernier LabPro data-collection devices. The LabPro can be used in conjunction with Texas Instruments graphing calculators, computers, or as a stand-alone device in the field. Students can collect data while riding roller coasters, swinging, or riding in vehicles. More importantly, by using a wide selection Vernier sensors, students can collect data from physical experiments conducted inside and outside of the classroom. To give you an idea of the types of data that we will be able to collect, here are a few of the sensors that are available: temperature, pH, motion, magnetic field, soil moisture, gas pressure, and EKG. Using the LabPro's and sensors, students can collect real-world data, transfer it to TI calculators or computers, and then carry out relevant analysis on that data. In short, my students will be able to travel full circle, linking conceptual math and physics to concrete scenarios.

Einstein stated, “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” I believe that the pursuit of knowledge is nothing more than an attempt to satisfy the imagination.

As an educator I want to convince students that math may be explored before understood and fan the imaginative pursuits that they naturally possess. My students deserve the opportunity to be exposed to explorative learning. Otherwise, I will forever be providing a lack-luster response to the question, “When will we ever use this?"
