My Students

There is no greater feeling for a child than that of a true accomplishment. Students who have historically had trouble in school are often those who feel this emotion least frequently, but that's no reason to deny them the opportunity.

My students are entering high school significantly behind grade level in reading and are enrolled in special education programs.

Most of them read no better than the national standard for students in third or fourth grade, which puts them at a serious disadvantage as they try to prepare for post-secondary education and the workforce. Moreover, many of these students are almost completely uninvested in reading by the time they reach our doors, as they feel as though they have been failing for too long and are on the verge of simply giving up.

My Project

Luckily for my students, we are implementing Scholastic's READ 180 intervention program this year to make sure that all ninth graders are ready to participate in academic curriculum and life beyond school. I am truly excited about the opportunity to equip them with these skills, and I'm looking for help collecting resources to keep them organized. Our school is one where most students receive free lunch and lack the resources to purchase their own class materials. My students need binders, sheet protectors, and cardstock to organize materials for a new reading intervention program that they will use this year. Keeping classroom portfolios containing evidence of their progress and reports that show their achievements will be a critical element in keeping students motivated when they have previously been less successful in school than their peers. Keeping, filing, displaying, and reflecting on our work will be the ultimate testament of how they have truly grown throughout the year, and I would love to be able to give them a tool that can achieve just this.

This project is important to my students because they need to be able to see their growth throughout the year in a tangible way.

For this intervention program to succeed, each student needs to remain invested and motivated in his or her own learning. Thank you for giving each of them the resources they need to foster a sense of agency!
