My Students

Students in rural America cannot depend on farming in their future anymore. With today's hard economic times, they need to be prepared to enter college if they so desire. We have to ensure they have ALL had the best possible instruction. The future of rural communities depends on their success.

Our community is a very small rural county in Kentucky.

Transportation is an issue, with many of our parents working out of the county and no public transportation available to our students or families. Many of the students in our school are in one-parent homes and have family economic issues. There is little business and only one factory, and local fundraisers do not yield large amounts of money for major purchases. The school district has made major cuts this year with staff and extra-curricular funds; for example, athletic funding at the high school has been cut to $0 dollars to spend for the 2010-2011 school year. Extra funding for higher level projects such as this are also discouraged. Rural students deserve better in order for them to enter college on an equal playing field with their peers from across the nation. Getting the right ACT score so they can get in to a college of their choice to begin with is sometimes their greatest hurdle.

My Project

Businesses are finding a dramatic lack of competence in the writing of business documents—memos, letters, and e-mails—that are vital to the communication between employees and customers. Companies like Proctor and Gamble are spending billions across the nation to educate their employees in business English. The ACT English & Reading Workbook embedded in my daily lessons would help resolve this issue. With the ACT English and Reading workbook, my grammar and reading lessons would also include/reinforce the necessary content needed to pass the ACT. Fifteen minute mini-lessons will be used to start off the class at least three days a week. Students results will be analyzed and individual/group remediation will be developed to ensure ALL students master the necessary skills needed. Students who still don't grasp the concepts will be recommended for after-school tutoring where they will receive small group and sometimes one-on-one tutoring.

This project is vital because it would provide resources to every junior English student in our high school, not just the privileged few who have parents with the money to buy these types of resources and are constantly pushing them to do better in school and to think about college.

Many never receive any encouragement from home to go to college. Others aren't even aware of the fact that they are smart enough to go. Sometimes it takes the ACT test results to prove it to parents and teachers.
