My Students

I am in the business of teaching the best route to the moon, how to make recycled paper, and molecule modeling with bubbles. That's right, you may or may not have guessed that I am a 3-5 Science teacher. I teach almost 400 students to get excited about science.

I am in a Title I, high poverty, high-needs school, but I am in the business of teaching each student that no matter what their situation is at home, or outside the classroom doors, they are first and foremost ALL scientists.

This year I am teaching 3-5, and I have to say I am a little nervous. The "big kids" in our school are actually bigger than me and I am afraid that if I don't really WOW them and keep it interesting I won't be successful with this tough crowd. Having 38 5th graders in one classroom all by myself is a little daunting, but I know with the right attitude and supplies, I can do it!

My Project

So one day in my afterschool science class for 4th grade last year, I put some games on my SMARTboard. They went wild. I had no idea, but most classrooms do not have a SMARTboard and if they do, most do not use it. However, I use mine everyday with my classes and have noticed how excited they get about simplest games or video clips. So I can imagine if I have an arsenal of SMARTboard games for ALL of my classes next year. Now with excitement, comes noise. I don't mind it usually when working in small groups or when they get excited about a topic, but I do hate having to clap 10 times, switch off the lights, ring bells, show hand signals and raise my voice to get their attention. My room suddenly sounds like a circus. So, with the yacker tracker, I keep the decibels in my comfort range. When it gets too loud, the tracker alerts them, not me.

Didn't you hate it when your teacher yelled so loud because they heard a whisper, yes, I did too, but this is a thing of the past with the Yacker Tracker!

It's both visual and auditory. Did you used to get bored with the same notes that were written 40 years ago by your teacher (often outdated) that you copied for hours on end? Say no more to that style with the SMARTboard games. With all of this I want to go to school right now, don't you?... and hey, it's summer!
