Good Gracious, it's Green!

My students need some visual and hands-on science literature and materials to integrate into our garden unit.

My Students

I had a student exclaim in disbelief, "Salads grow in gardens?" He had no idea where fresh vegetables and fruits came from. Upon further investigation, I realized I was surrounded by children that were accommodated to fast food restaurants and prepackaged foods. So, we planted!

I teach two separate third grade language arts classes at a public school in Texas.

Our school is considered a Title One school because over fifty percent of our children are on or below the poverty level. One of my classes has several emotionally disturbed children as well as those that speak english as a second language. They need an immersion of vocabulary, visuals, and hands-on activities to make these experiences true to life. My other class contains children that are recognized as gifted. These same experiences will lead to further investigations and extended, independent activities as well as responsibilities and ownership.

My Project

Last year I planted a garden with my students and it was the most successful and inspiring project I have ever undertaken. As the project unfolded, I saw room for growth, noted problem areas, and began a list of items needed to make this project even more successful. I want to include a variety of genres and literature, non-fiction selections, fairy tales, and folk tales that would go along with the unit such as, "Jack and the Beanstalk", "Stone Soup", and "Plantzilla"...just to name a few. Though I have some of the resources to do another planting session, I lack materials to help with storage of project materials (chair bags), cooking supplies and utensils to be able to properly handle garden items without always bringing items from home, and further materials and displays to assist with investigations (visuals, microscope). Students will learn about nutrition and be able to follow fresh produce from seed to their plate...all while participating in multiple hands-on projects.

I cannot wait to share pictures and stories about how immersed the students become during this project.

It doesn't go away, but lasts all year and into the next. From the planning, soil cultivation, composting worms, picking weeds, watering, daily upkeep, planting, harvesting, cooking to the eating...this creates a magnitude of interest, responsibilities, ownership, and most of all...enthusiasm!
