My Students

Stretch, jump, dance, move--- working out to improve our fine motor and gross motor skills. Adaptive PE is offered in our classroom, and it is provided by me, the Special Education teacher, my classroom aides, and the Occupational Therapists.

My students are in 2nd-8th grades.

Our classroom is called F.A.S.E.S. We focus on Functional Academic Skills for Exceptional Students. These EXCEPTIONAL STUDENTS are Special Education students with disabilities that include Autism, Developmental Disability, Cognitive Disability, OHI, Speech/Language Impairment, and Joubert Syndrome. Our school is a low income school with increasing enrollment--- WE ARE RUNNING OUT OF ROOM!! Currently, our gym is scheduled to the max which does not allow a spot for our students who need Adaptive PE in addition to their daily modified PE. Therefore, we workout in the classroom and outdoors. Our exercise group focuses on fitness, visual motor skills, motor planning, strength, endurance, etc. The students have a range of abilities and disabilities. Some students need assistance standing, while other students need constant redirection during group workouts.

My Project

Fitness equipment would be an AMAZING addition to our exercise group, because it would allow for more variety in our workouts. The students get distracted easily because they are not always engaged in the workouts, so fitness equipment would be a great way to keep them interested in working out. The exercise bands and tubes would work on strength training, visual motor skills, and motor planning. The jump ropes can be used for individual performance enhancement or team building. In both situations, students concentrate on endurance, visual motor skills, and motor planning. The stackable steps will probably be the students' favorite. We can use this item for my students who are unable to step up and down on stairs by teaching them how to step. We can also use this for the more advanced students to build endurance and motor planning. All of these items will be in addition to our workouts we already implement-- the workouts would now be more entertaining and hands on.

I try to give my students every opportunity to participate in activities as the "regular" education students do.

Sometimes modifications and adaptations have to be made due to the severity of their disabilities. This Adaptive PE class makes them feel proud of their accomplishments. They are hard workers who deserve special activities and this workout equipment would be special to them.
