My Students

The hardest thing for elementary students to do is transition from "Learning to Read" to "Reading to Learn". They begin making this change during their upper elementary years. However, this transition can be difficult for students who still struggle with learning to read.

My students come from middle to lower income families.

A large majority live in low income housing. They often struggle with low self esteem and academic performance which increases behavior problems. Most classwork has to be done at school because there is little or no educational support at home. They are kids who want to succeed but either have no desire to try or don't think they can. My students often lack interpersonal skills and need practice working with others. They love the use of interactive technology and tend to respond well to these types of activities and it holds their attention for longer than most classroom activities.

My Project

The "Reading for Meaning" software would accomplish many things. The students will use the interactive software to read material at their level and will increase as they become stronger readers. Students who are reading on or above level will be able to advance as well. They will gain interpersonal skills through group work and discussion of the material they've read. The students will take ownership of their education through self correction and evaluating their own answers. It will allow students to learn how reading relates to other subject areas such as social studies, science, and writing. Students will be combining "Learning to Read" with "Reading to Learn".

We all know that reading is the foundation for all the other subjects areas.

We read everyday of our lives. If a child can't read or won't read they are also going to struggle in their other subject areas. A child who can read and wants to read will become life-long readers and have more success. With success comes greater self esteem, lower behavior problems, and a desire to learn more.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
