Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like to sit in class and listen to the teacher talk and talk? Research shows students learn best when they are out of their seats and engaging in active learning. My students love hands-on learning activities that give them opportunities to interact with their peers.

My students come from mostly Hispanic backgrounds, many with parents who speak little or no English.

They are fun-loving, warm and curious. They attend a middle school (6th, 7th & 8th grades) in the older part of town that has gotten a reputation over the years for being below standard. My students are not regularly introduced to new technology at home because many come from poverty-stricken households where both parents work many hours a day to make ends meet. They look forward to being at school and learning about the world outside of their neighborhood. When they are presented with a challenge they rise to the occasion, oftentimes using creative problem-solving in ways that exceed my expectations! We live in Washington State where many immigrate from Mexico and find work in the crops our state produces. My students' parents have high hopes for their children; that they will be given the education they need to one day have more choices for their lives than what they have had.

My Project

Did you know there is an invisible "grid" covering our planet? How would you like to use our government's multi-billion dollar satellites in outer space? The ones that were top secret until 2000? The ones that can show you exactly where you are on the planet at any given moment? These are all questions I would pose to my students at the beginning of our unit on GPS navigation. Understanding Global Positioning Satellites will give my students a broader understanding of geography, math, problem solving, critical thinking and cooperative group work. They will be able to get out of their chairs and learn actively outdoors, using the GPS units to solve problems introduced in lessons connected with our state's learning guidelines. My students will develop important analytical skills that will help them become productive, successful citizens who know how to ask questions, solve problems, communicate effectively and inform themselves about the local and global issues that affect their lives.

Since my family began caching we have found almost 1.000 caches across much of the United States.

My son has developed a new appreciation for being outdoors, caring for the environment, manipulating the GPS unit, interacting with others to find a cache and decoding puzzle caches. This has inspired me to find ways to teach my students how to expand their world view, have fun seeking caches at school and to understand that we are all responsible for how we maintain our planet.
