My Students

"I can see it going up!" My students were very excited when we used immersion and student thermometers this winter when measuring the temperature of snow, cold water, hot water, & liquid soap. We had to borrow ours from the 5th grade and we'd love to have our own!

My students are enthusiastic first graders who love to learn new things.

Many of them have limited prior knowledge due to economic hardship and inability to travel and experience the world around them. They are enthralled by books and love hands-on activities and experiments that connect them to the real world. We live in a state with four seasons and celebrate each one during our science units. Each year, at least 1/3 of my class receives extra support in the way of reading, math, counseling, or special education. Luckily, they are part of a school climate where everyone knows their name and they feel loved and protected by every staff member from their teacher to their principal to their custodian and their bus driver. Recent budget cuts are increasing class size and reducing budget spending. These kids don't have much more than what they get at school so it is important to make their time with us as valuable and engaging as possible.

My Project

I built my own big book storage case a few years ago, but it is rapidly deteriorating and I find that the kids don't access it because the front covers are not displayed. They are not interested by the spine design. I envision them seeing a big book cover and oohing and aahing over its illustrations and consequently choosing it to read to themselves or with a partner. We have to borrow immersion and Fahrenheit thermometers from 4th and 5th graders, so we need our own to conduct our experiments during our weather unit. We measure the temperatures of several liquids and discuss why and how the temperature changes. We take our thermometers outside and compare the temperature to inside our classroom as well as watch the red liquid rise or fall during a quick temperature change. We also use our information to dress for the weather in our state during each season.

Access to big books in the case will encourage their love of reading.

Using the thermometers will spark their curiosity about temperature and connect it to how it affects their own lives in terms of appropriate outdoor clothing and how they can learn to dress for the weather.
