My Students

"There is no substitute for books in the life of a child," Mary Ellen Chase once said and I take this to heart. For the past five years I have taught first graders to read by a very clear path of skills. This year I will teach fourth grade and will foster a life long love for reading.

I teach in a rural area with a school of very dedicated teachers but also a group of teachers who are not always willing to "change" when change is needed.

Our student population has shifted and we are in need of change. Teaching students with a text book is the "common" approach. I am teaching fourth grade this year and hope to inspire not only my students by embracing real literature but also hope to lead my new grade level to step out of their comfort zone and away from the reading text book. Quality literature is the way to capture the student's interest in reading and hopefully inspire them to become life-long readers.

My Project

I desire to teach comprehension strategies and fluency practice with real literature that will foster a deeper level of comprehension and also peak students interest in reading. Making reading more meaningful and enjoyable is my primary goal. I will do this by putting REAL literature in the hands of each one of my students. My students need on grade-level literature to read during literature circles.

One of my favorite feelings in the world is holding that new book in my hand while relaxing on the beach.

I want every student in my class to know what it feels like to read a real piece of writing rather than a text book form of literature. Hopefully I will inspire them to find the type of literature that inspires them!
