My Students

Have you eaten a crepe from a street vendor in Paris? My students have spent two years reading about French foods, seeing pictures of crepes and crepe vendors, and watching videos of tourists eating crepes in Paris. But they still wonder, what does a crepe taste like?

I teach college-bound French Regents students in a high-needs urban high school.

We are a large neighborhood high school that provides the extra help needed so that our students are accepted at excellent universities. Because of their hard work, motivation, and dedication, my students are overcoming the many obstacles associated with poverty. They come from dozens of ethnic and language backgrounds and bring a rich-cultural diversity to the language classroom.

My Project

My students will be putting together a cookbook of their favorite foods from their home countries in French. What better way to begin than by sampling crepes from France! We will review the imperative mood as we look at and write recipes--including a recipe for crepes. Students will role-play ordering food and other restaurant scenarios all while enjoying the yummy tastes of French crepes. We do a lot of activities in my classes to engage all of the senses--except taste, until now! I want to give my students a taste of France this year that they will never forget.

Many of my students come from very disadvantaged situations.

They are always so appreciative of the extras I do in the classroom. I believe that this special treat will not only increase their love for learning, but will also reaffirm that there are many people that believe they are worth investing in. They may look big and tough, but they are still children that need our support. And I really believe that a taste of France will open their hearts to the possibilities before them.
