Author Study

My Students

During the middle school years, children need to have a person connection with literature to nurture a love of reading. This novel by this author grabs the child's attention and takes them to a creative and exciting world during the 1950's. To nurture a love of reading opens the world to a child.

I teach in a full inclusion public school setting in Virginia.

My children have very diverse learning styles and have special needs. They range in ages from 11-12. They love to read and are very creative. I have read and purchased the other two books by this author myself. However, my children have asked to read this novel as well because it is the last in a series by this author. I can't afford to buy them myself this time.

My Project

This book, "A season of Gifts," will help my children truly understand historical fiction through the eyes of a great author. The other two novels, which I purchased, were from earlier times in the main character's life. Grandma Dowdel is a comical character created by Richard Peck, who is the author of the book. All of the novels take place during the 20th century and begin with the background of World War I in a small Illinois town. The last novel is set in the 1950's. This year my children wrote greeting cards to the author and receive a personal card from him. They were very excited and I gave each one of them a copy to keep. They could not believe that the author actually wrote to them. Then, they wanted to read the final novel, which I did not have.

My project is important because it will open up a new world to reluctant readers.

I teach so many children, who are at various reading and academic levels. It is very hard to find a book that will draw and capture the attention of so many kids. The author study has been very successful this year. I hope to expand it this coming year to include writing, projects, and another write to the author session with your gracious gift of novels.
