My Students

Research shows that students learn math more effectively when they are active participants in their learning. That's why I want to use graphing calculators to enhance my school's mathematics curriculum.

My students are Native Americans from the Navajo, Laguna, Isleta, Santa Ana, Zia, and other tribes.

They have chosen to attend my school, which provides them with rigorous academics in addition to cultural and Native language studies. Many of the students have English as their second language and many could be labeled "high risk" due to low skills and socioeconomic status.

My Project

By providing 15 graphing calculators for my classroom, you will be allowing my students to work in groups of two to graph things like trigonometric, linear, and quadratic functions. The calculators will serve as an integral part of a curriculum known as the "Interactive Mathematics Program" which seeks to make math more concrete and discovery based than traditional mathematics. This type of math curriculum is especially enriching for Native American students, who often have difficulty succeeding in lecture-based, traditional mathematics classes.

With your help, my students will begin to think of math as fun, engaging, and meaningful!

Even though graphing calculators are expensive, it is a small price to pay for a shift in student attitudes that can help lead to student success in mathematics. Please consider donating; my students and I would really appreciate it!
