My Students

In an episode of Seinfeld, Jerry says about people who dread public speaking, 'you're telling me that at a funeral, most people would rather be the guy in the coffin than have to stand up and give a eulogy?'

Hello, and welcome to my proposal to help students avoid the common phobia of public speaking.

Eager and enthusiastic, my first graders represent five languages in a high poverty school in a district that cut $10 million along with custodians, computer techs, librarians, music and classroom teachers from the budget. Ouch!

My Project

This year we adopted Daily 5, a literacy program that turns reluctant readers into voracious ones by allowing them to choose their own books and materials at which they work independently. With your help, we can use Daily 5 time for simultaneously working on literacy and public speaking skills. With scripts tailored to the level of emergent readers, my animated students will develop their public speaking abilities while improving self discipline, cooperation, and vocal and physical awareness. With the addition of colored sheets, paper bags, and cardboard props, students can even turn these scripts into skits and puppet shows.
