My Students

My students love computers but they don't love the "mobile computer cart" at our school. I have to sign up for them well in advance and then for only a limited amount of time. When we finally get them, they are often not charged or some will be broken.

My students are 12-13 years old.

They are curious and love to ask questions. They are really into "strange and amazing facts". Almost all are animal lovers. They like web-cams and interactive simulation type websites. They of course love social networking, and I would like to see them use these type of sites for educational collaboration. These are good kids! Our middle school is the only one in our county, which is classified as a rural district. There are about 800 students. A recent survey found that 70% of households have either no Internet service or dial-up only.

My Project

My students sometimes think I have all the answers. I mean every single possible answer to every conceivable question. "What tools were used to discover the first dinosaur?" "Do whales have a favorite plankton?" "What's the scientific name of a llama?" "What did Gregor Mendel LOOK like?" Well, we could boot up the 8 year-old desktop and let one kid find the answer in about 10 minutes. Or, if we had netbooks, we could assign a small group to collaboratively find the information and post it to our class web page in the same amount of time. This would allow other classes to view the information and add comments or new content. I would also like to use these netbooks to create online nature blogs and for students to read and reflect on current scientific research. These are just a few of the things we would use the netbooks for.

Using the Internet makes learning fun and interesting for students.

I would be able to use these netbooks in my class for several years and they would really be an asset to the students. There are too many wonderful resources available online to list them all here. We just need to be able to GET online quickly and reliably without having to sign up weeks in advance for computers.
