My Students

Round tables are wonderful for dinner conversation, playing cards and staring contests. However, research proves that students perform better when seated facing the teacher. Our library is full of round tables that have the students facing each other instead of the teacher.

Students in Kindergarten through 5th grade come to the library for instruction in reading, literature, technology, research, and writing, with some science and social studies thrown in.

We are a public school in a rural area. We teach between 650 and 750 students each year. And everyone of them comes to the library each week. Our county is one of the poorest in the state. There is very little industry in our area. When cotton was king, ours was a textile mill town, but that era has passed and those mills are gone. Some of the students enter kindergarten with a love of books; some don't discover the joy of reading until much later. But it is an important part of our teaching goals to develop that joy and create life-long readers to help enable the students to succeed in school and life.

My Project

Today, the students come into the library and sit facing each other at round tables. This works great when we are working in small groups; however, I do need to have their attention at the front of the room on a regular basis. And just as I need to see their smiling faces, they need to have a surface to hold their notebooks. It is a challenge for them to give me their attention and take notes when seated at round tables. I'd rather challenge their minds, however, than their dexterity. The rectangular tables I'm requesting will make my job--and theirs--a lot simpler by offering the students a more productive seating arrangement.

One goal in the library, is to provide a friendly, comfortable space.

It should be a pleasure to come to the library! These tables will improve the quality of the students' weekly classes by making them more comfortable and less distracted. In short, the tables will enable learning--and that's what we're here for.
