My Students

Help us bring a hands on experience into the classroom. I want my students to be able to see a plant grow rather than just read about it in a book.

Our elementary school is a special one.

We teach pre-k through fifth grade and have a special focus on environmental studies. Our students come from all types of background. We have different cultures, different economic status’, and different leaning styles. But the one thing that brings them all together is our goal of helping to change our world. This year our students have been composting, recycling, planting, growing, and learning. They are passionate about making a difference. Some students had never had the opportunity to plant a seed and watch it grow before coming to our school. We incorporate environmental science into all aspects of our curriculum. The students may have a math lesson outside and count all the flowers they find, or write a story about their favorite tree at the school. We want them to understand that taking care of their environment relates to all areas of life.

My Project

We are lucky enough to be in the beginning stages of having a garden at our school. In order for our garden to be successful we must first start the seeds indoors until the weather is right. A grow cart would make growing and observing our plants so much easier. We could bring the grow cart into our classroom so that each child would be able to participate. Right now we have our plants in front of the window, but that often leads to our seeds drying out. A grow cart would allow us to better control the amount of light our plants receive.

Our students will gain so many new experiences from the grow lab.

They will gain a sense of responsibility by taking care of their plants. The students get to see that they can grow good, healthy food. We also plan on selling some of the food that we grow, so they will get an unforgettable lesson in economics. Thank you so much for helping teach my students they can make a difference in the world!
